Bridge & Structural Engineering

The technical expertise and professional capabilities of our key Bridge & Structural Engineering staff cover the entire range of bridge and structural engineering applications from the complex, long-span specialty bridges such as cable-supported, arch, segmental, and truss. We also have considerable experience in the short to medium-span glider and box-girder bridges. We are proficient in both concrete, steel, and steel-composite designs for both road and rail bridges of fixed and movable spans. Reliance technical team is composed of individuals with design and construction experience on a variety of different tunnel types in differing geotechnical and site conditions. Geotechnical Engineering

Our geotechnical engineering capabilities include site assessment, geotechnical investigations, preparation & review of boring logs, geotechnical testing specifications, assessment of geotechnical material properties, preparation of geotechnical baseline reports (GBR), assessment of settlements, determination of allowable bearing loads and pile capacities, development of geotechnical specifications, assessment of deep excavations, development of instrumentation and monitoring specifications during construction, feasibility studies, etc. among others.

    Senior members of our professional staff bring considerable project management and project delivery experience on projects of national and international significance as shown by the sample list of projects.     Cost Estimating & Project Controls

    Our Bottom-up Cost Estimating approach builds the overall estimate for a project by compiling the detailed estimates completed at lower levels of the Work Breakdown Structure. This work breakdown structure method ensures that no portions of the estimate are omitted and makes it easier to make comparisons to other estimates by third parties. We also identify project uncertainties and allocate appropriate allowances to cover these as well as escalation. In our experience, a detailed bottoms-up estimate is the most reliable estimating method, especially for a complex project. Our estimating team has experience in preparing design and construction cost estimates for both small and large projects. As a result, we have been able to accumulate a growing data base. Reliance, utilizing the considerable experience of its key staff in large and complex projects, also provides such services as Claims Avoidance Reviews, Change Order Review & Negotiation, Schedule Reviews, and Earned Value Assessments.

    High-Level Technical Review of San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Post Construction Issues, San Francisco, CA: Member of expert panel appointed by the California Senate Transportation Committee to provide a high-level review (2016):

    Sakonnet River Bridge, RI: Bridge Engineering Technical Expert on team investigating reasons for the cracking of the concrete parapets on the new Sakonnet River Bridge (2014).

    RA 166 Concrete Box-Girder Viaduct Flyover, Kuwait: Technical advisor on review of field conditions and implementing constructability improvements and re-design of the pre-cast concrete segments to alleviate construction difficulties (2013).

    Chambal River Cable-Stayed Bridge Collapse During Construction, Kota, India: One side of this cable-stayed bridge collapsed during the cantilever construction. Provided review of design, construction methods, and material evidence (2012).        

    M6 Grand Rapids South Beltway Bridges, George Town, MI: Investigation of construction and steel erection issues involving a total of three heavily skewed and curved simple span girder bridges (2008).
