Second Tacoma Narrows Suspension Bridge

Location: Tacoma, Washington (2008)

Owner: Washington State Department of Transportation

Prior Experience: Sena Kumarasena

The Second Tacoma Narrows is a 5,979-ft long, 2,800-ft main span suspension bridge with a superstructure height of more than 200-ft above the river high-water elevation. The 78-ft-wide superstructure consists of a space truss with the orthotropic deck that also acts as part of the top chord of the space truss. Sena Kumarasena, Ph.D., PE served as the Lead Engineer for the independent design check for the suspended superstructure. The independent Design Check consisted of a complete independent analysis of the entire bridge system consisting of permanent load and transient loads including live, wind, temperature, and seismic. The independent design check covered the main span and approach span trusses, hangers, and hanger connections. The bridge is designed to accommodate the future placement of a second, lower roadway through the stiffening truss. The bridge was designed considering this future live loading as well.
