Arthur DiTomasso Memorial Cable-Stayed Bridge

Location: As Built Evaluation (2002)

Owner: Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT)

Prior Experience:

Arthur DiTomasso is a 300-ft main span cable-stayed bridge in the city of Fitchburg, MA. It crosses both the Nashua River and the Boston and Maine Railroad tracks. It has a deck width of 45 feet and serves 2 lanes of traffic. Sena Kumarasena, Ph.D., PE served as the Project Manager and Technical Lead for the independent review of as-built stresses and safety assessments on behalf of MassDOT and FHWA. This independent safety and as-built condition review was commissioned by MassDOT and FHWA due to premature concrete cracking as well as significant deviation of the cable forces from those predicted by design. The review included a survey of observed distress, a complete as-built analysis, and an evaluation of all major elements.
