Post Office Square Parking Garage is an award-winning design of a 1,400-car, seven-level, underground structure in the heart of Boston’s financial district. Construction of the garage employed the top-down method and required extensive monitoring of the perimeter slurry wall for lateral movement. Eldon Abbott, PE served as Project Manager for the project. Design services included civil structural, traffic, permitting, geotechnical engineering, and construction-phase consultation. The perimeter of the garage is formed by slurry walls and the interior columns are formed by load-bearing elements (LBEs) set in a slurry trench. In addition, coordination of the landscaping and architecture for a 1.7-acre street-level urban park at the roof level of the garage was performed. The project, completed in 1990, has won several awards including the Grand Conceptor Award from the ACEC of New England and has become a well-known visitor destination.
